Concert of improvised experimental music - Thomas Lehn and Benoit Moreau
Cultural Center REX
22. 04. 2014 20:00
Thomas Lehn and Benoît Moreau attempt to lose control over sound. When improvisations on their toy piano feed their analog synthesizer, the latter is influenced by the toy piano through electronics, not the men. The concert is made possible by the cooperation of Goeut Institut Belgrade, Ring Ring, and Cultural Center REX.
The duo plays in essentially two ways: on one hand they orchestrate largely thanks to graphical compositions inspired by the works of outsider artists. On the other hand, they attempt to lose control over the sound when improvisations on their toy piano feed their analog synthesizer, as the latter is influenced by the toy piano through electronics.
Thomas Lehn : analog Synthesizer
Lehn was born in Fröndenberg (Germany) in 1958. Since the early 1980s he has been working as an author and performer of contemporary music. As an interpretive pianist he has played concerts since 1982 - performing both contemporary new music and traditional composed music of the classical and romantic periods. In 1989 he initiated the chamber ensemble Trio Dario and the Mengano Quartett, performing compositions of contemporary, avant-garde music and first performances of commissioned pieces. Developed in conjunction with his work as a pianist, live-electronic music performance has been Lehn's focus since the early 1990s. Due to his experience of a wide spectrum of musical fields based on his background as an interpreting and improvising pianist in classical, contemporary, and jazz music, and being involved in numerous other projects like music theatre, dance, multi-media, studio pre-/post-production etc., Lehn has developed an individual 'language' of electronic music. The electronic equipment he uses consists of the analogue synthesizers of the late 1960s, and since 1994 in particular the EMS Synthi A. The flexibility of this instrument - for example, to modify electronic sounds directly as well as to combine and control several parameters of the sound synthesis at the same time - allows him to spontaneously act and react in close contact with the various structural degrees of the musical process.
Benoît Moreau : toypiano, electronics
Born in 1979, Benoît Moreau works in the fields of improvised music and composition. Using the piano, the clarinet, electronic instruments, or writing, he also contributes music to film, performance and theater. With improvisation at its core, his approach departs from conventional wisdom in composition. As a composer, however, his work precisely avoids the constraints inherent to improvisation. He is a co-founder member of the Association Rue du Nord (Lausanne) dedicated to improvised music.
